Community Speedwatch

Hi, I’m Dan,

I live in Cottimore Lane, near the Terrace Road end. For those of you who don’t it, there is a long straight from Terrace Road to the first bend just after Carlton Road.

I frequently witness drivers driving in excess of the roads limits, sometimes I would estimate that speeds must exceed 50-60, even 70mph on occasions.

I’ve parked myself behind a tree once or twice with my camera, hoping to catch someone on film, but I’ve always felt powerless over this issue, until today.

I just happened to be driving down Rydens Road when I spotted 2 people in hi-vis jackets and a speed gun. I admit I drive a rather low slung sports car, so I felt the eyes on me as I drove past, doing 26mph, driving responsible as always.

I had my camera on me, so I turned round, parked up and wondered over to have a chat with them and to see if they would let me take a photo to post on this site to help raise local awareness, so this is what I am doing.

They were part of Community Speedwatch, which is a locally driven initiative where active members of the community join together with the support of the Police to monitor speeds of vehicles using speed detection devices. Vehicles exceeding the speed limit are referred to the Police with the aim of educating drivers to reduce their speeds. If, like me, you like information in the form of moving pictures, here’s a short video about Community Speedwatch.

I shall certainly be making the call and adding my support. I have already spoken to some other Labour Party members who have also expressed an interest in taking part, so I am putting this out there to anyone and everyone. To any meglamaniacs who like playing with (ray) guns and wearing bright shiny jackets please get in touch. Alternatively, if you are a very mild mannered and concerned local resident, also please do get in touch and it goes without saying anyone in between, please CONTACT US.

I was given the below information from one of the volunteers, which is what is handed out to any drivers who stop to ask questions.

The residents of Elmbridge, Walton South, fully supported by the Parish Councils and Surrey County Council Highways, and working in partnership with Surrey Police, are monitoring vehicle speeds in an effort to reduce the number of drivers who choose to exceed the speed limits.

This is not an enforcement check, but vehicle details will be passed to SUrrey Police who will in turn be writing to registered keepers asling them to encourage those who use the vehicle to keep to the speed limits through the Borough. Drivers who regularly offend may be targeted by police enforcement activity.

The volunteers are under instruction not to get involved in any disputes over their activity. If you wish to raise any issues and concerns regarding this matter or would like information on how you can start a scheme or become a volunteer, please contact Surrey Police on Tel: 101 and direct your comments to:
